FERI: The Wonderful World of Muscles and Muscle-Machine Interfaces, Dr. Aleš Holobar and Team

Saturday, April 20, 2024

Muscles enable us to move, breathe, and perform various tasks. They are crucial for maintaining metabolism and body mass. They play a significant role in maintaining posture and regulating body temperature. Through muscles, we communicate with the environment, both verbally and non-verbally. Muscles translate and amplify electrical commands from brain centers, which allows their use in advanced human-machine communication. Capturing the electrical activity of muscles does not require invasive methods; it can be detected non-invasively on the skin surface above individual muscles. With the help of computer algorithms, we can evaluate the level of user fatigue, stress, or effort during movement from the captured recordings. We can objectively assess the effectiveness of rehabilitation or training and monitor muscle aging. Recorded electrical muscle activity also holds surprises; for example, it can be used to control a virtual third arm. Curious how? Join us in the wonderful world of muscles and discover what advanced muscle-machine interfaces, which can be embedded in wristbands, clothing, or smart furniture, can enable. The HybridNeuro project is funded by the European Union under the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon Europe (Grant Agreement No. 101079392) and the UK Government's Guarantee Scheme for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to fund Horizon Europe (Grant Agreement No. 10052152).
