European Young Scientists Competition, 9-14 September 2024
The European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) took place from 9-14 September 2024 in Katowice, Poland. This prestigious competition, organised by the European Commission since 1989, brings together young scientists aged 14-21 from different countries in Europe and around the world. The competition encourages scientific curiosity and international cooperation and gives young talents the opportunity to present their innovative projects.
This year's competition attracted 146 young scientists from 37 countries, presenting projects in science, technology, social sciences and other fields. Among the winners were outstanding projects that stood out for their innovation and research excellence. For example, Canadian students Ann Wang and Angela Cao won high prizes for their projects focusing on medical research and artificial intelligence-based communication tools.
Slovenia was represented by: Julija Skrt and Jaša Krevh (Gimnazija Vič) in Chemistry with their thesis "Effect of hydrolytic enzymes on the antioxidant efficiency of olive leaves" - winners of the prize; Neža Kunič and Ema Železnik (Gimnazija Bežigrad) in Biology with their thesis "Effect of ivermectin on the eyesight of pollinators"; Mija Kapun and Daniil Gainullov (Gimnazija Jože Plečnika Ljubljana) in the field of physics with the paper Superhydrophobic aluminium surface with anticorrosive and self-cleaning effect.
